Featured Project: Art Deco Apartment With A Touch Of American Style

The Fountain Boulevard private residence is a modern apartment project in Kiev designed for a young cosmopolitan couple

The 85 m² modern apartment located in Kiev, Ukraine is owned by a young cosmopolitan couple that already has enjoyed living in big cities such as New York and Moscow. However, both of them were born in Kiev and decided to buy their first common apartment at their hometown.

The choice of the interior style for designer Yana Molodykh was not difficult; she opted for an art-deco style combined with the light of the American style equally relevant in the big cities of the world. The apartment resembles the interior of Carrie Bradshaw and Big’s apartment, the iconic couple of the famous series “Sex and the City”.

A key feature of the interior apartment is the large panoramic windows, due to which the whole space is flooded with a daylight. However, to give the space even more “feeling of air and freedom” Yana decided to make some changes. Kitchen, living room and dining-room were united into one unique space. As a result, the owners of the apartment received a perfect place for a leisurely breakfast with a stunning overlooking of the city.

As the basis for the interior design, Yana selected a gray color for the walls and a geometric pattern to the floor, furniture ad wallpaper, which is typical of the Art Deco style. The design of the apartment does not seem to be a bright one, but all the shades and halftones can “play” in a very special way due to the abundance of natural light.

The soft shift from a darker shade of grey of the walls into a lighter shade of the cornice, ceiling and window slopes make a color composition of a living room more difficult and adds some magical glow“, says Yana Molodykh.

Glossy surfaces and mirrors create an interesting game of reflections. At the window there is a small console, which can turn into the desktop and become a work-zone. On the wall there is an ironic painting “Dancefloor” by famous Ukrainian artist Tatyana Malinovskaya, which perfectly reflects the bright character of the owner of flat, a young woman that loves and knows how to attract attention.

A midcentury floor lamp Stanley by Portuguese brand DelightFULL has become an important and essential element, which stylistically linked the entire interior. “The piece added that light American accent due to its geometric shape, and highlighted levity ambience of space, said Yana.

Yana Molodykh creates exclusive design for homes, as well as interiors for the commercial use such as restaurants, offices and boutique hotels.

Yana graduated from the “Detail Studio School” in Moscow, one of the best European educational centers for the interior design, which had presented a number of world famous decorators. Bringing a feeling of beauty and admiration to the everyday life of her customers, she is continuing to learn from nature, travels and art. Yana is attending to the best professional exhibitions, such as Maison et Objet Paris and iSaloni Milan.

  1. Being in love with our work is always the key to achieve better results. Are you in love with your job? What do you love the most about being an interior designer?

Of course, I am in love with my work and always invest a part of my soul, otherwise it is impossible to get a decent result: beautiful interior and happy customers.

  1. How important is a good chemistry between you and your clients to achieve better results?

Without a mutual understanding between the client and the designer it is not possible to create a space with a beautiful story. The harmonious interior – is always a result of collaboration between designer and the customer, they must be “on the same wave”, understand each other totally. It is always a partnership based on respect and trust.

  1. How would you describe your style? Do you have any personal “signature”?

I am working in different styles and areas – everything depends on client’s wishes and my vision. But I guess that my “signature” is always recognizable on my projects by sophisticated and “airy” interiors, delicate work with colors, textiles and details.

  1. Choosing the right piece for a design set might seem an easy task. However, it takes a lot of time and attention to find the perfect match. Which advices you have for those who do not know how to start a challenge like this?

With simple tools such as collage on my smartphone I can immediately see whether this sofa or table is “living” in the interior or not. I also advise trust your intuition – the goods which have been selected intuitively, often perfectly complete existing ones in the interior. You should not be afraid to mix things and put some color into your interior. Refer to the process of interior transformation as to a game, and you’ll see how beautiful the result can be.
